Quick Facts about The Vietnam War
The war that Nathaniel Tripp fought in was the Vietnam War. This was has three major qualities about it. They are: it was the longest war in American history, the most publicly unpopular war in American history, and the only war America ever lost to date.
US troops occupied Vietnam for a remakable 16 years. This makes it twice as long as the revolutionary war. Soldiers in the war served two year long tours of duty. Tripp was there from 1968-1971 because after his combat tour was over he volenteered to be a welfare provider to a Vietnamese village.
Many people wonder why the most powerful nation on earth lost a war to a country made up mostly of peasents. There are many reasons for the loss but the main one is that the North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong had the support of most of the civilians because they believed that they were fighting the war to be rid of outside influence and become an independent nation.
Today there is a memorial to the 52, 235 people who died in the Vietnam War and it is located in Washinton D.C. “The Wall” as it's called is V-shaped and made out of solid black granite with the names of the dead engraved on the sides.
