The Beatles

The Beatles are one of the most talented, popular, and well-known bands of all time.  They revolutionized music with their new, innovative styles.

The Beatles originally formed in 1957 as the Quarry Men.  Over the next few years, the band members and its name had changed around quite a bit.  The band officially changed its name to the Beatles in 1960.  The origin of the name is still unknown.  It is thought that they named it the “Beetles” originally by brainstorming different names, and then changed it to the “Beatles” shortly after, “beat” having to do with the music/drums.  The line-up at that time was John Lennon (rhythm guitar), Paul McCartney (rhythm guitar), George Harrison (lead guitar), Pete Best (drums), and Stu Sutcliffe (bass).

On April 10, 1962, Stu died of a brain hemorrhage.  Later that year, Pete Best was replaced by Ringo Starr.  The new line-up was John Lennon (rhythm guitar), Paul McCartney (bass), George Harrison (lead guitar), and Ringo Starr (drums).  This would be the line-up for the Beatles that would last the rest of their career.

The Beatles’ first big hits were “Please Please Me,” and “Love Me Do.”  They really got popular after their debut on the Ed Sullivan show, on February 9th, 1964.  “Beatlemania” had swept the nation.

Over the next few years, the Beatles wrote hundreds of hits, 27 #1's in North America.  Unfortunately, the Beatles broke up in late ’69, to early ’70.  There were many disputes between the band members, finally leading to the break up.  “The world wept” at the tragic news. Many thought that it wouldn’t last…that the Beatles would soon be back in the studio after a little time off. Sadly, this was not true.

Never has there been such an influential band as the Beatles, and there probably never will.
