The Cultural Revolution
1966-1969~1976
The Cultural Revolution was the
period in China`s history when the Communist Party came into power again. Mao
Zedong, the leader of China,
wanted to excite the youth of China
and wanted to treat everyone equally. To do so, he stopped all schooling and
persecuted the citizens who, he believed, were part of the “old world”. Mao
also stopped all foreign influence. He made it illegal to give a Western-style
haircut or sell Western-style clothes. Trade with other countries was cut off.
Every part of the “old world” was destroyed. Works of literature and art that
didn`t go along with Mao`s beliefs were destroyed. A group of young men, called
the Red Guard, was used to terrorize the cictizens and get rid of all the
“old”. Mao officially delared the Revolution over in 1969, but many people
believe that it was really over in 1976.
